Despite supply chain issues and the COVID-19 pandemic still a relevant issue, construction on the Calgary Cancer Centre is still underway and currently has 900 construction and trades workers working around the clock to keep the project on schedule.
The building is slated to be two million square feet and will be one of the largest and most modern health facilities of its kind in the world. It will increase cancer care capacity in Calgary and Alberta by bringing together and offering world-class cancer care. The building is expected to be open in late 2023.
“The progress on the Calgary Cancer Centre is great news for Albertans,” stated Alberta Premier Jason Kenney. “This huge project is part of Albeta’s Recovery Plan, creating jobs now while building Alberta’s future. This centre will save lives by giving Albertans world-class cancer care.”
The current construction focus is to complete the building envelope, install flooring, walls, ceilings, millwork and minor medical equipment, getting all of the major mechanical and electrical systems like heating, HVAC and power fully operational, and radiation therapy vaults have just been completed.
Next on the agenda is to fully complete construction, quality control and inspections while installing major pieces of medical equipment such as liner accelerators and MRI’s.
“Everyday in our health system, dedicated physicians, nurses and health-care staff provide compassionate, quality cancer care and treatment to Albertans no matter where they live. This new hospital supports that work and will mean even more people and families in Calgary and southern Alberta will have access to innovative treatment, new research initiatives and the modern, live-saving services they deserve.” Said Minister of Health Jason Copping.
As of Oct. 2021, the Calgary Cancer Centre has generated more than seven million hours of work, it covers more than 186,000 square meters with 13 above-grade levels and five levels of underground parking — and with an anticipated opening in late 2023 the Calgary Cancer Centre will be home to the best comprehensive care for cancer patients and families in southern Alberta.
