Magrath and District Recreation Committee is going to be hosting Family Fishing Day on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Magrath Fishing Pond in Magrath’s Jubilee Park.

Melissa Stanford, a board member of the Magrath and District Recreation Committee, says that since the event happens on Father’s Day weekend, it is a great way for kids to get outside and spend time with their dads/parents and that kids 16 and under are welcome to participate in the actual fishing.

“There will be prizes for the first fish caught and the biggest fish caught,” said Stanford.

In addition to the fishing, Stanford says, there will be a lunch concession selling hotdogs, a bouncy house for younger kids, a $2 duck race, and there is the playground on site. There is no cost to register or participate in the fishing, Stanford says, and people are welcome to bring their own fishing rod, bait, and chair or borrow a rod on site.

Support for the event, Stanford says, was received via the ‘Kids Can Catch’ Initiative coordinated by Alberta Conservation Association.

“Magrath and District Recreation Committee wanted to host a spring community event to get people out and enjoying our facilities and this seemed like a great avenue to do so,” said Stanford. “As an organization, it really is a collaborative effort to host this. It is always a fun day and the community interest in it has been fulsome.”
