Magrath U18 team advances to CAHL championship series

The Central Alberta Hockey League’s playoff season is coming to an end, and one local team will play for a championship.

In the U11 category, Magrath dropped a pair of Tier 4 playoff contests to Foothills, which started with a 3-1 setback on Saturday. Weston Oldland had the lone goal in the game, assisted by Maxwell Harker. Tymen Allsop made 17 saves in goal.

On Sunday, Magrath fell by the same 3-1 score, as Cody Beier had the Magrath goal, while Andrew Woolf drew the assist. Allsop made 21 saves in net.

Raymond’s U11 squad also dropped two playoff games, as Saturday featured an 8-3 loss to Oyen in Tier 2 play. Beckett Holt picked up two assists for Raymnd and Cooper Rodeback, Brixden Manning and John Baldry did the scoring. Jordan Schmidt made 16 saves.

Oyen skated to an 8-6 win on Sunday, despite Rodeback’s four points on three goals and one assist. Baldry scored three times as well, and Jesse Wilde added an assist. Schmidt faced 25 shots.

In U18 play, Magrath is set to play for a Tier 3 championship, as the team defeated Vulcan in the league semifinal.

Friday kicked the series off with a 2-1 Magrath win over Vulcan, as Rigin Smith scored twice. Cruz Johnson, Knox Tame and Makoy Mehew had one assist each. Kohlman Blackmore made 18 saves and took the win in goal.

On Saturday, Magrath clinched the semifinal with a 3-0 victory. Cruz Johnson had a goal and an assist, while Gage Nelson and Clay Christensen had the other goals. Conner Schneyder made 32 saves to post the shutout.

The championship series against Coaldale begins with game one on Sunday, as Magrath is set to host at 3:30 p.m.
