It was a gold-medal weekend for the Raymond Comets senior girls basketball team.
The No. 1 seed heading into the School Sports Alberta 2026 5A Basketball Provincial Championships did not disappoint, as the Comets dominated its way to a title.
Saturday afternoon’s championship game was but a formality, as Raymond earned a huge 87-63 win in the final over No. 3 ranked Western Canada.
It capped off a weekend which began Thursday with a big 94-46 win over No. 8 Ross Sheppard.
Then, on Friday, the Comets faced a familiar foe in the semis, as Raymond took out No. 4 ranked Magrath by a score of 89-60.
The provincial title capped off a season where Raymond went 12-0 in the regular season in the Prairie Sky Conference, where the Comets averaged an astounding 102 points per game – 22 more than second-place Magrath.
In the 5A zone tournament, Raymond topped Lethbridge Collegiate Institute by a score of 97-27, and then rolled to an 85-63 win over Magrath in the title game.
Magrath, for its part, earned a 76-54 win in the quarters over No. 5 Strathcona, and then dropped the bronze-medal game with a 62-28 loss to No. 2 Jasper Place.
On the 5A boys side, local teams did not fare as well, as No. 2 Magrath was upset in the semifinal. The Zeniths dropped an 84-77 decision to No. 3 Holy Trinity, and afterwards, Magrath could not rebound in the bronze-medal game, where the team fell 72-63 to No. 4 Strathcona.
Magrath’s tournament started out on the right note with a big 82-67 win over No. 6 ranked Harry Ainlay in the quarters.
In the 1A girls tournament, Stirling, which came in ranked No. 2, advanced all the way to the final before Coaldale Christian emerged with the gold, with an 88-64 victory in the all-south final.
Stirling needed a tight 54-48 win over No. 7 Glendon in the quarters to keep the team’s hopes alive.
Then, on Friday, Stirling needed another heart-stopping win in the semis, as the team pulled out a 72-67 victory over No. 3 ranked Eckville.
Stirling’s boys team also took silver, this time in the 2A provincials, as the Lakers dropped a 112-86 decision to the top-ranked team in the tournament, Heritage Christian.
No. 2 Stirling was hot early, as the Lakers racked up a 97-67 win in the quarters over No. 7 St. Augustine. In the semis, Stirling took out No. 6 Olds Koinonia by a score of 80-57.
