Harry Ainlay tops Comets in high school football home opener in Raymond

Raymond’s 2026 home opener did not go according to plan, as the Harry Ainlay Titans headed south and spoiled the party for the Comets.

As a new season got underway under the lights, Ainlay struck first with a six-yard passing touchdown with 8:50 left in the first quarter.

Three minutes later, Ainlay extended the lead to 10-0 on a 31-yard field goal.

But just as the first quarter was about to expire, the Comets led an impressive drive that was highlighted by a 20-yard catch by Joe Wilde that set up Raymond at the one-yard line. A plunge across the goal line, with 22 seconds left in the opening quarter, cut the Ainlay lead to 10-6.

Ainlay extended the lead to 11-7 with a quick-kick single in the second, before it looked like Raymond was poised to take the lead. A Cody Harris catch put the ball on the Ainlay 17, and a Titans penalty set up the Comets at the 12-yard line.

But a fumble on second down pushed Raymond back and as a result, the Comets missed a 26-yard field goal and settled for a single.

 The game stayed close until the third quarter, when Ainlay struck on a huge 60-yard scoring play with 10:18 left, as a Titans receiver got behind Raymond’s secondary and dashed into the endzone for a major to make it 18-7. 

A 30-yard major on a running back draw made it 24-7 Ainlay with 9:20 left in the third, before Raymond had another golden opportunity to draw closer.

The Comets hit on a huge passing play to Cache Beazer to move the ball to the Ainlay seven. Another Wilde catch moved the ball to the one but unfortunately for Raymond, the Comets could not convert on a short-yard attempt, as Ainlay took over with 11:42 to play in the fourth.

Raymond’s next drive stalled at the Ainlay 18, as a Titans sack ended the hopes of the Comets.

Later in the game, with 5:16 left in the fourth, Ainlay put things away with an interception return for a touchdown, to make it 31-7.

This week, the Comets host Calgary’s St. Francis for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
