Comets top Rams 7-6 in a Friday-night defensive showdown

It was another instant classic last Friday night in the city at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.

The Raymond Comets pulled off an exhilarating 7-6 victory over the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams, as the two teams battled in a contest that turned into a defensive stalemate.

LCI took a 6-0 lead in the game but a missed extra point ended up costing the city squad in the end.

For Raymond’s part, the Comets squandered a few key opportunities, as a dropped pass in the end zone and a bobbled snap on a third-down play from the LCI one-yard line kept the visitors off the board.

“It seemed like neither team could punch it in the red zone,” said Comets head coach Connor Ralph.

It wasn’t until the 6:02 mark of the fourth quarter when the Raymond offence kicked into high gear, as the Comets put a touchdown on the board, thanks to a Jace Ralph major. A successful extra point put the Comets up by one.

Raymond appeared to have the game in hand as the clock ticked down in the fourth quarter, until the Comets fumbled with 1:40 left on the clock to hand the Rams the ball near midfield.

A defensive stand ended the game, as a Raymond interception finally put the game on ice.

“Our D clutched up at the end,” said Ralph, who added it was a huge victory against Raymond’s top rival down south. “It was fun to get a win against a rival. That is 10 straight against them.”

With the win over LCI, Raymond is now ranked No. 3 in the Football Alberta 5A rankings, right behind 4-0 Harry Ainlay and 3-0 Salisbury. LCI is ranked No. 6 in the province, down from the No. 4 spot.

Raymond will now have a bye week, before a Sept. 25 game against Chinook High School.

“We will enjoy some time off before getting back at it,” said Ralph.
