Alberta reopens $720,000 grant for restorative justice programs

Alberta groups can now apply for money to run restorative justice programs.

The province opened applications for the Alberta Restorative Justice Grant on September 16. It is putting $720,000 into the program this year.

Restorative justice brings together people harmed by crime, offenders, and community members. The goal is to repair harm and relationships outside court, when it makes sense.

“Restorative justice gives people meaningful opportunities to take responsibility and strengthen relationships within their communities,” said Mickey Amery, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “This funding will help community organizations deliver programs that support accountability, healing, and safer communities across Alberta.”

Groups can apply for up to $50,000 for one program. Applications close October 7. Eligible applicants must be based in Alberta. They include municipalities, registered nonprofits, and charities in good standing, community coalitions with a fiscal agent, First Nation and Métis communities, and some youth justice committees. Individuals, police services, for-profit companies, academic institutions, and Crown corporations cannot apply.

The money can pay for wages, travel, training, program administration, and other operating costs.

Last year, they supported 19 programs across Alberta, the province says.
