Comets improve to 3-1 with win over Wisewood

The Raymond Comets kept a grip on the No. 2 spot in the Football Alberta 5A rankings following another dominating home victory.

Now 3-1 on the season, Raymond only trails 4-0 Harry Ainlay in the rankings. Lethbridge Collegiate Institute is the only other southern Alberta team in the top 10, as the 1-2 Rams sit at No. 7.

In a Friday the 13th match-up against Henry Wisewood, the Comets came away with a 25-0 win, to run the team’s home winning streak to three games.

It was another dominant performance on the defensive side of the ball, according to head coach Connor Ralph.

“Our defense just did their job and made sure to be assignment sound,” he said.

On offence, James Baldry and Walker Gibb scored the majors for Raymond, as the Comets cruised to another big win.

Playing at home for the third game in a row was huge for the Comets, according to Ralph, who added nothing beats playing in front of a supportive crowd.

“We love the energy our fans bring,” he said. “That is very important for us.”

Raymond will look to make it four in a row on Friday night, as the Comets will host George McDougall in a 7 p.m. contest.

Ralph added his defence will be tested, as the visitors will likely look to put pressure on Raymond’s defensive backfield.

“McDougall will be a well-coached team that will try to pass a bit on us.”

So far this season, at 3-1, the coach went on to say his team has made strides each and every week.

“We have consistently improved, which I am proud of. Our players work hard.”

On the bantam football side of things, both local teams came out winners in Southern Alberta Minor Football Association play last weekend.

The Comets rolled to a huge 48-8 win over Cardston, while Magrath put up even more points in a 55-6 romp over the Lethbridge Coyotes.

This Saturday, the Comets will have a bye week, while Magrath will host the Lethbridge Rams for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
