Quite simply, Friday night’s Comets versus Rams showdown is shaping up to be the game of the year.
The No. 2 ranked Raymond Comets and the No. 6 rank Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams will do battle at the University of Lethbridge Stadium. At 7 p.m., the two storied high school football powerhouses will meet for the first time this season.
Raymond comes into the game as winners of seven straight games against Canadian opponents. After a season-opening setback to No. 1 ranked Harry Ainlay, Raymond has been on a dominating run, as the Comets offence has racked up the points and its defence has been nearly airtight.
On the weekend, the Comets did drop a 49-12 decision in Coeur d’ Alene but up north, Raymond has been perfect for the better part of the season.
LCI has also been on a run, as the Rams will enter play Friday night after a huge 43-17 win over Foothills.
Coming into the southern Alberta showdown, only 6-0 St. Francis (ranked No. 3), 5-2 Earnest Manning (No. 4) and 7-1 Spruce Grove (No. 5) stand between the Comets and Rams in the rankings.
Friday night’s game will essentially act as the 5A South Zone Championship game, as the two teams prepare for 5A provincials under the Alberta Schools’ new classification system.
