The Raymond Comets high school football team kept its winning streak alive last week with a dominating win over the Cardston Cougars.

A 56-7 win over Cardston ran Raymond’s winning streak to five games, and has the Comets still in the No. 2 spot in the Football Alberta 5A rankings. Harry Ainlay, the 6-0 Edmonton school, still sits in top spot, ahead of 5-1 Raymond.

The victory over Cardston was another chapter in the storied rivalry between the southern Alberta powerhouse programs. This time, however, it was all Raymond.

“We played a good game against Cardston,” said Comets head coach Connor Ralph, who added the game was a little tougher than the final score indicated.

“Credit to them. They came out and made us turn over the ball a few times.”

In the end, Raymond was simply too much for Cardston, as the Comets had a number of players that stepped up in the contest.

“Seth Harding, Gunner Nelson, Cody Harris all played a good game,” said Ralph of some of his standout performers.

The coach added a number of his younger players chipped in with some solid play as well throughout the Cardston game.

“We had some Grade 10s like Khyrhum Boehme play well,” said Ralph.

“Kasen Heggie played well on defence.”

With the Cardston game wrapped up, Raymond will turn its attention to the Chinook Coyotes, a team that is currently ranked No. 5 in the 4A rankings. Chinook is coming off a heartbreaking 30-29 loss to Catholic Central, a team that currently sits in the No. 1 spot in 4A.

“The Coyotes will be a good matchup,” said Ralph. “We have never played them in the history of our program, so it should be a fun challenge.”

Raymond will look to build on a solid start to the 2025 season, which has caught the attention of the football world outside Alberta.

Currently, the Comets hold the No. 8 ranking nationally in the Canada Football Chat rankings. Ainlay is No. 1, with a number of schools from Ontario, Saskatchewan, Quebec and British Columbia in the middle.

“It is good to be recognized nationally,” said Ralph. “I think it’s good for CFC to try to promote high school football. We focus on the process and let the outcomes take care of themselves.”
