The Highway 3 Twinning Project continues to move forward, expanding capacity, improving safety, and supporting long-term economic growth across Southern Alberta.
This phase includes twinning 54 kilometres of highway between Taber and Burdett, as well as constructing an eight kilometre four-lane bypass around Grassy Lake, along with:
• 11 bridge-sized structures
• Intersection improvements & widening
• Acceleration/deceleration lanes
• 10 service roads
• two rest area pullouts
• Bulk water fill station relocation
The project is expected to be completed by Fall 2026.
Traffic Impacts
Curve Realignment Detour:
• Opened September 10, 2025
• In place until May 2026
• Traffic detoured onto the new alignment between RR 144 and RR 142
Speed Reductions & Closures:
• HWY 877 speed reduction remains in effect
• RR 132 (between HWY 3 & TWP 102) closed until Summer 2026
Progress to Date
Grading – 77 per cent complete
• Topsoil placement and seeding completed in multiple areas
• Final subgrade complete from RR 163 to RR 132
• Rough grading complete from RR 132 to RR 121
Gravel – 70 per cent complete
• Mainline base course complete from RR 163 to RR 132
Paving – 46 per cent complete
• First and second lifts complete from RR 163 to RR 132
Utilities – 95 per cent complete
• Major relocations completed for ATCO, Fortis, TELUS, AltaLink, Zayo, SMRID, and others
• SMRID bridges, pipelines, and laterals—100 per cent complete
Other Work Completed:
• Two detours
• Culvert bores
• Highway 3 Twinning webpage launched
Winter 2025 Work Ahead
• Detour maintenance (RR 144–RR 142)
• Misc. topsoil placement
• Site cleanup
• Burdett storm pond work
• Electrical and lighting installation
2026 Final Construction Season
Key Work Planned Includes:
• Final grading, subgrade tie-ins, and seeding
• Gravel base course placement
• Paving, including the final lift
• Lighting and electrical at 14 locations
• Sign installations, line painting, and rumble strips
• Burdett Bulk Water Fill Station relocation
Traffic Availability:
The new eastbound lanes and Grassy Lake bypass are scheduled to open October 1, 2026. Remaining site work will continue with minimal impact.
