After a season-opening loss to Edmonton powerhouse Harry Ainlay, the Raymond Comets high school football team is on a roll.

On Friday night, Raymond rolled to a second consecutive home victory, as the Comets crushed Calgary’s Notre Dame by a score of 42-7.

The win solidifies Raymond’s No. 2 in the 5A rankings, as the 2-1 Comets only trail 3-0 Ainlay in the rankings.

Friday’s Notre Dame game ended up as a blowout but early on, the two teams battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw until late in the first quarter.

With just over five minutes left on the clock, Raymond moved the ball down the field with a methodical drive, capped up with a 15-yard touchdown through the air.

The Comets struck again with just over eight minutes left in the second quarter, as Raymond connected on a 13-yard passing major to take a 13-0 lead.

Late in the second quarter, Raymond’s offence put the game away with another major, highlighted by a 30-yard pass-and-run play that took the ball all the way to the Notre Dame four yard line. Raymond ran the ball in on the following play and with the ensuing two-point conversion, it was a 21-0 advantage.

The Comets offence poured it on late, as a 34-yard pass set up Raymond at the Notre Dame four-yard line with just 43.6 seconds left. A holding call pushed back the Comets before Raymond connected on a miraculous pass play that set the Comets up for a third-and-goal situation from the two with 16.7 seconds remaining. One play later, Raymond was stopped at the one-yard line, and the teams would head to the locker room with the score 21-0.

Raymond would put even more points on the board in the third quarter, however, thanks to a 29 yard major on a pass-and-run play.

Later in the quarter, the Comets took a 35-0 lead on a nine-yard touchdown pass.

A 30-yard TD pass with 6:42 left in the fourth quarter made it 42-0.

On the last play of the game, a Notre Dame pass into the endzone was completed, as the Calgary team avoided the shutout.

This week, the Comets will take on Henry Wisewood on Friday night at 6 p.m., as Raymond continues its five-game homestand. Wisewood is ranked No. 7 in the 5A rankings and will travel to southern Alberta with a 1-0 record after a 26-6 win over Centennial.
