Glen Motz, Conservative MP for Medicine Hat—Cardston—Warner riding, describes 2024 as being ‘a very tough year for most people.’
“The economy was in the tank,” said MP Motz. “Cost of living continued to rise. Carbon taxes went up. The price of everything continued to increase. Wages certainly did not keep pace, and so people were struggling, not only in this riding, but across the country. I’m anxious for 2025 to change the course on that.”
There were good parts of 2024, however, MP Motz stated, and those good parts included the fact that different interest groups received grants, there was a decent amount of rain that allowed for decent crops, and there were also decent cattle prices. The highlight of the year, MP Motz stated, was the fact that the Conservatives ‘shone a spotlight on the corruption within the Trudeau government.’
“We help hundreds of people throughout the year on matters involving federal departments,” said MP Motz. “I make dozens of phone calls weekly. The reason I’m in Ottawa is for the people in this riding. As Conservatives, we’ve been very, very disciplined and very focused on listening to Canadians and developing messaging and plans should we be privileged to form the government in the next election.”
MP Motz says that currently, his number one focus is to push for a carbon tax election in early 2025.
“Pushing for that goal of a carbon tax election will allow Canadians to have a voice and to change government, and we’re working on that basically every day,” said MP Motz.
MP Motz also states that there are also a lot of individuals around Canada who harbor serious concerns about U.S. President-elect Donald J. Trump’s second time in office.
“I think what Canada needs is strong leadership that will respectfully and professionally work with the Americans who are our largest trading partner,” said MP Motz. “I think with a change in the federal government in Canada, the fear that people have for President Trump hopefully will not be as realized. I know the threat of tariffs are great concern to our business community and our consumers, as we import a lot, so that’s certainly something that we need to be aware of and work with the Americans. We need to have a ‘Canada first’ approach as well.”
MP Motz says that although Prime Minister Trudeau officially resigned on January 7, 2025, he has elected to stay in his position until a new leader is found.
“He prorogued Parliament to avoid accountability and it’s unacceptable,” said MP Motz. “It is quite clear that the only reason that he’s shutting down Parliament is because he knows he and his party do not have the confidence of the House of Commons. I think we have to remember that the bedrock principle of our democratic system is responsible government, and the Prime Minister and the government that he leads must always command the confidence of the House of Commons. Our government is led by Trudeau and his incompetent ministers, and if they don’t have the confidence of the House, then it’s incumbent upon him and the Governor General to call an election.”
MP Motz believes that proroguing Parliament before President Trump is officially inaugurated is ‘problematic.’
“Canadians, I think, deserve a government that has a mandate to negotiate with our closest trading partner,” said MP Motz. “Now is the time to have a strong leader in government.”
