In a battle of traditional rivals, this one wasn’t even close.
Saturday in Raymond, the Comets senior varsity boys basketball team improved to 12-0 on the season after a 113-88 dominating win over the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams.
Three Raymond players connected for 20 points, as Jeter Heggie and Liam Davison both had 23-point games, while Drake Still added 20.
The scoring barrage continued with Brady Baines and his 19 points, as Boston Harker was able to connect for 16 points.
Tanner French replied with 22 for LCI.
Saturday’s big win over the Rams capped off a weekend which also included another lopsided contest, as the Comets cruised to a 117-97 win on Friday over the Cardston Cougars.
This time, Harker led the way with an impressive 29-point performance, as Heggie was Raymond’s second-leading scorer with 22.
Payson Hill had 19, Davison hit for 16, Baines chipped in with 12 and Still added 11, as six Comets were able to connect for double figures.
That scoring output mirrored the team’s 2019/2020 scoring output, as Raymond has six players that average over 12 points. Heggie leads the way at 22.3, as Harker closely trails at 20.8. Baines (16.2), Davison (13.6), Still (13.1) and Hill (12.1) make the Comets one of the deepest teams in the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League.
As for the Magrath Zeniths, it was an up-and-down weekend that included an 88-63 loss on Friday to the Medicine Hat Mohawks, and a 92-59 win on Saturday over the Catholic Central Cougars.
After those two games, Magrath sits third in the standings with a 7-5 record.
Friday’s loss saw the Zeniths attack bottled up for the most part, as Dray Walburger had 21, Cody Tollestrup had 14 and Chase Harris added 13.
The offence came alive on Saturday in a 92-point effort, as Walburger broke out with a huge 39-point performance. Colton Finck chipped in with 13 as Mac Strong and Garrett Stock each had 10-point games.
In the weekend’s junior-varsity contests, Raymond defeated the Cardston Wildcats 100-52 and dropped a 76-72 decision on Saturday to LCI. Raymond is now in second place at 9-3, as Cardston sits in first at 10-2.
Ryker Dewsberry had a huge 30-point game against Cardston, while Ashton Witbeck scored 17. West James added 15 and Mason Leavitt finished with 13.
Dewsberry added 23 more against LCI, as Witbeck and James both had 13. Leavitt added 11.
Magrath dropped an 84-65 decision to Medicine Hat and then defeated Catholic Central 89-65, as the Zeniths now sit fifth place at 6-6.
Ty Michelson led the way with 19 against Medicine Hat, as Levi Balderson scored 16.
Against CCH, Michelson scored 26, as Cody Scheirlinck added 12. Joseph Van Bruggen and J.T. Smith scored 11 each and Hunter Cook added 10.
