Chalk up another Tier 1 championship for the Raymond Comets.
A season that started off slowly with tough loses to three teams which would eventually be ranked in Football Alberta’s top 4 culminated with a huge win on Saturday over the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds.
Raymond rolled to a 45-17 win in Edmonton in Commonwealth Stadium, as the Comets scored early and often in a lopsided affair.
The southern Alberta football powerhouse put up 14 points in an explosive second quarter to take a 17-9 lead into the half. Raymond put up two more scores in the third and fourth quarters to take the game over, and make the team’s case as one of the top teams in all of Alberta.
The Comets amassed an impressive 490 yards of total offence, with 290 through the air and 216 on the ground. It was a balanced attack Ross Sheppard simply had no answers for.
Houston Ralph was 10-13 for 155 yards and a touchdown, while Brock Barnett was 5/10 for 135 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Ralph also rushed for a score, and added 44 yards on seven carries on the ground.
Barnett’s impressive afternoon also included 21 carries on the ground for 158 yards and a touchdown, as the do-it-all Comets star was all over the field. Barnett also chipped in on defence with three tackles, a quarterback sack and an interception.
Luka Kauro paced the team’s air attack with six catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Everson Harker had 95 yards on four catches, and had a touchdown. Pyken Easthope had three catches, good for 25 yards and a touchdown.
Tanner Morales added a 20-yard field goal.
On defence, Keston Henry led Raymond with six tackles, while Easthope and Ace Richards had four stops each.
