Hockey season begins for local teams in CAHL

Hockey is back on the ice in rinks throughout southern Alberta.

Central Alberta Hockey League action has kicked off for the 2023/2024 season with a number of tiering games.

For Magrath’s U18 Tier 3 team, the tiering season has gotten off to a solid start, as the team sports a 2-0 record so far.

Last Friday, Magrath posted a 5-2 win over Taber, as Rushton Ripley led the way with a hat trick. Gage Nelson and Adam Chipman both had two points on a goal and an assist each. Blake Roe had two assists and Clay Christensen and Makoy Mehew had single helpers.

Conner Schneyder made 25 saves in goal to preserve the win for Magrath.

On Sunday, Magrath put up five more goals in a 5-1 win over Brooks. This time, the winning side had five different goal scorers, as Ripley, Joseph Noad, Ross Ravoy, Luke Rodeback and Rigin Smith had singles. Christensen and Cruz Johnson picked up assists.

Schneyder was victorious once again in net, as he made 15 saves.

The U18 team will hit the road for a Friday game in Pincher Creek and will be back at home Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against Okotoks.

Magrath’s U15 Tier 3 team is 0-1 in tiering play, after a 6-0 Friday the 13th loss to Picture Butte. Kohlman Blackmore and Ashston Jensen gave up three goals each in goal for Magrath, as Picture Butte racked up 40 total shots on goal, while Magrath mustered 21.

In U13, Raymond is 2-0 so far in tiering play, which kicked off Friday with a 6-2 win over Pincher Creek. Jack Patrick Salmon had two goals and two assists to pace the attack, while Hayes Hill had two goals and one assist. Carter Harris had a goal and two assists and Checotah Many Grey Horses added three assists. Tanner Wells also scored for Raymond, as Kylan Blackwater and Eddie Little Shields had one assist each.

Kalani Purcell made 34 saves to pick up the win in goal.

Raymond’s offence kept humming on Saturday in a 7-2 win over Foremost, as Little Shields picked up a goal and an assist. Many Grey Horses, Harris, Hill, Wells, Kraden Heath and Lane Smith all added one goal each. Blackwater added an assist.

Purcell was strong in net with a 36-save performance to pick up the win.

Raymond is 1-1 in U11 tiering play after Friday’s 7-6 loss to Taber and Saturday’s 10-7 win over Claresholm.

Against Taber, Cooper Rodeback had two goals and an assist, while Stetson Nelson had a goal and an assist. Houston Hill, Klay Koopmans and Brixden Manning also had goals, as Beau Salmon added an assist.

Jordan Schmidt made 20 saves in the loss.

The Claresholm game featured an eight-point performance by Rodeback on six goals and two assists. Hill had two goals and an assist and Track Nelson had a goal and an assist. Koopmans, Nelson and Tripp Durfrey had two assists each, while Manning added one goal. Max Walburger had one assist.

Remington Jardine faced 11 shots in goal and took the victory.

Magrath is 1-0-1 so far after the season started Saturday with a 5-5 tie against Crowsnest Pass. Gibson Bates scored three times, Payke Bates had a goal and an assist and Kashton Johnson had two assists. Weston Odland had a goal and Grayson Owens and Ty Mehew had one assist each.

Tymen Allsop made 12 saves in goal for the win.

On Sunday, Magrath won 8-3 over Vulcan, as Gibson Bates had five goals and one assist and Carter Juhasz added tow goals. Payke Bates had a goal while single assists were credited to Owens, Mehew, Johnson, Odland, Kacey Blackmore and Chase Ririe.

Allsop made 17 saves in goal.
