It was a classic southern Alberta basketball clash Tuesday evening.
The Magrath Zeniths played host to the Raymond Comets in boys action in the Southern Alberta High School 4A Boys Basketball League.
Raymond, one of the prohibitive favourites on the 4A provincial scene, emerged with an 87-82 win to move to 3-0 in the regular season, while Magrath fell to 1-1.
The JV contest saw the Comets take a 69-66 buzzer-beater win to move to 2-1, as the Zeniths are now 0-2 on the young campaign.
Last week, the Comets racked up a 105-65 win over Cardston in the senior game and escaped with a tight 81-78 victory in the junior contest.
Magrath and Raymond will not be back in action in league play until 2024, when the Zeniths travel to Cardson on Jan. 11 and the Comets host Catholic Central on Jan. 17.
In senior girls play, Magrath took on Medicine Hat last night (results unavailable at press time). The Pandas will now have to wait until Jan. 11 to get back on the floor, as Magrath will be in Cardston to take on the Cougars.
As for Raymond, the Comets will not play again until Jan. 13, when the team will clash with Magrath in JV and SV games set to be hosted in Magrath.
Raymond is 2-0 in the senior and junior standings, while Magrath was 0-2 in both JV and SV, heading into the Wednesday game against Medicine Hat.
In Deep South Basketball League play, Stirling fell 55-36 to Immanuel Christian in senior varsity girls competition. Immanuel also won the JV game, this time by a score of 68-21.
The Stirling girls will not be back on the court in league play until Jan. 11, when the team will take on Winston Churchill High School.
Stirling sits at 1-2 in the standings in both junior and senior varsity girls standings.
As for Stirling’s boys team, the Lakers will resume league play on Jan. 10 against Coaldale Christian. On Jan. 11, Stirling will take on Chinook.
The senior and junior varsity teams are both in first place in the standings with identical 3-0 records.
