Playoffs set to begin in Central Alberta Hockey League

It’s time for the second season to begin in the Central Alberta Hockey League.

In the U11 Division, the Raymond Tier 2 team will hit the ice on Saturday and Sunday for a playoff series against Redcliff. Raymond finished 7-8-1, while Redcliff’s regular season record was 4-8-4.

Magrath’s U11 squad also begins the playoffs Saturday, when the team kicks off a series with Kainai. In the Tier 4 standings, Magrath led the regular season with 28 points and a 13-1-2 record. Kainai finished in last place at 2-13-1.

In the U13 category, Magrath finished last in its Tier 3 division with a 2-10-4 record. Last Friday, the team battled to a 3-3 draw against

Taber, as Carter Juhasz had a goal and two assists to lead the way. Gibson Bates had a goal and an assist, while Levi Zobell added one helper. Kalani Purcell made 37 saves in net to preserve the tie.

On Saturday, Magrath fell 10-5 to Taber. Lane Smith put up three goals and added an assist, while Trigger Heggie had a goal and two helpers. Juhasz was credited with two assists, while Gibson Bates had the other goal. Purcell made 50 saves in the contest.

Magrath’s U15 Tier 2 team had two games, which started with Saturday’s 4-2 win over Medicine Hat. Easton Fraser had three goals and Bronson Ripley tickled the twine once. Tason Heath, Jaxton Rodeback and Dayson Loose all had one assist each. Nate Nelson picked up the win in goal thanks to a 20-save performance.

A day later, Magrath and Medicine Hat battled to a 4-4 draw. Heath had two goals and one assist and Fraser scored twice. Colton Olson added one assist. Nelson needed to make 23 saves to preserve the tie.

Magrath (10-6-0) will now take on Indus (12-2-2) in the playoffs, with games set for Saturday and Sunday.

The regular season was good to Magrath’s U18 squad, as the team finished first in Tier 3 with a 10-2-4 record. Last Sunday, Magrath battled to a 4-4 draw with Pincher Creek, as Ethan Hendrickson had two goals and Gage Nelson added a goal and an assist. Beau Beier also scored, while Cruz Johnson and Logan Jensen had single helpers. Kohlman Blackmore was in goal for Magrath.

The U18 team will have some time off, as Magrath has earned a first-round bye.
