This year, Albertans have a lot to celebrate.
Our province has been growing at an unprecedented pace. People are coming here because they want a fair shot, a good job, and a place they can actually afford to call home. That kind of growth puts pressure on our communities to keep up — but in true Alberta fashion, we haven’t backed away from the challenge. We’ve rolled up our sleeves and got to work.
Last year, Alberta set an all-time record for housing starts. This year, we’re on track to break that record again — we’re getting shovels in the ground and homes built faster than ever. In fact, Alberta is single-handedly keeping the country’s housing start numbers from collapsing. Despite making up less than 12 per cent of Canada’s population, Alberta has built a quarter of the country’s housing starts so far this year. Put simply: Alberta is pulling more than its weight.
These aren’t just numbers. They represent homes — real places where people build their lives, raise their kids, and invest in their communities. We’re already seeing the impact. Not just in more houses, but also in more housing options and affordability. Nearly half of this year’s housing starts are purpose-built rentals, and Alberta’s leading the country in rent decreases, with average rents down more than 7 per cent province-wide.
Affordable housing is being built at record pace across the province. In Edmonton alone, affordable housing capacity has grown by more than 30 per cent in just two years — proof of what can happen when governments, housing providers, and local leaders pull together to get things done.
This progress didn’t happen by accident. Alberta is getting shovels in the ground faster because we’ve cleared the way for builders to do what they do best. From the companies with a vision, to the tradespeople putting in long days, to the government cutting red tape and backing construction with real incentives — everyone is pulling in the same direction. That’s what it takes to be a nation-leading province. Our plan to build more homes is working, and we’re going to keep supporting our housing partners so we move from permits issued to shovels in the ground, and finally to real homes for Albertans.
Now, that doesn’t mean the job is done. Alberta is growing fast, and we need to keep our foot on the gas. If we stay focused on increasing supply and keeping barriers low, we can make sure Alberta remains a place where people can put down roots and build a future.
But it’s worth pausing to recognize what’s working. Alberta is leading the country. We’re building at a record pace. And we’re showing once again that when Alberta takes on a challenge, we don’t settle for “good enough” — we set the bar higher.
That’s something worth celebrating.
