The second installment of the Raymond-Lethbridge Collegiate Institute battle certainly wasn’t anything like the first game.
In the end, the Comets escaped with a heart stopping 41-35 win in overtime, which was a far cry from the 7-6 victory over the Rams earlier in the season.
“It was a wild game for sure,” said Raymond head coach Connor Ralph, whose team needed double overtime to emerge victorious, thanks to a Jace Ralph rushing major.
The second meeting between the two teams was not a classic defensive struggle, though it looked like it might be another low-scoring contest early, as Raymond led 7-0 after one quarter.
A flurry of offence in the second quarter saw LCI briefly take the lead, before the Comets claimed a 21-14 advantage at the break.
“LCI ran all over us a bit and got a lot of momentum on the ground,” said Ralph, as the Rams rushing attack really started cooking in the second quarter.
But time and time again, the Comets responded, as the offence continued to pile up the points.
“Our offense responded and matched a lot of their drives,” said Ralph, as the two teams headed to overtime tied at 29.
With two tight wins over LCI, Raymond now moves to 8-1 on the season, as the Comets hold the No. 3 ranking in 5A, behind Salisbury (8-1) and Harry Ainlay (10-0). LCI, with its 6-3 record, holds the No. 4 spot.
Raymond’s next opponent is still up in the air, as the team will have this week off.
“We have a bye and then get after it again on Nov. 14 for provincial quarterfinal,” said Ralph. “We don’t know our opponent quite yet.”
