According to Stirling Mayor Trevor Lewington, Village of Stirling council continued discussions this month regarding the 2019 Tax Rate Bylaw and the final budget for the fiscal year. All residents should have now received their tax notice and property assessment in the mail. If you did not receive your tax notice or you believe there is an error, please contact the Village Office, as soon as possible. Property taxes are due in full by June 30 or late payment penalties are applied. (Note this does not impact residents who are set-up on preauthorized automatic payments). The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association has some helpful information about property taxes in our province available at this link: https://auma.ca/advocacy-services/programs-initiatives/property-assessment-and-taxation-hub/fundamentals-alberta%E2%80%99s-property-assessment-and-taxation-system/fundamentals-property-taxation-system.
A request for proposal (RFP) can be found on the village’s website for the sale and removal of the house located at 505 2 Street. Council acquired the property with a long-term view to develop multiple lots for resale in the future. More information is available at the Village Office. The RFP closes at 4 p.m. on June 14.
May has been a busy month for many organizations in our community, noted Lewington. A large contingent of Stirling youth and their leaders willingly sacrificed a Saturday morning on May 4 to participate in the annual highway clean-up. We appreciate the willingness of community members to lend a helping hand in the beautification of highways in our region.
According to Lewington, the rain held off just long enough, as the Stirling Historical Society held its annual Community Garage Sale on May 25. The popular event is promoted by the Historical Society across several media platforms in Lethbridge to help increase traffic and the potential for a sale. A portion of the registration fee also supports the ongoing work of the Historical Society.
Also, Lewington noted, the Stirling Fire Department held its 60th Anniversary Steak Dinner Celebration and Silent Auction on May 11. Council appreciates the generous donations of sponsors in the community who supported the great selection of items up for bid in the silent auction. Music by Coyote Junction helped ensure the Lion’s Hall/Community Centre was rocking until late.
Looking ahead into June, the Stirling Cemetery Society is looking for volunteers for their Annual Spring Clean-Up June 1 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Lunch will be provided. Bring your rake and a shovel.
What The Junk Vintage Market returns to the Michelson Homestead June 15 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This outdoor market brings talented collectors, makers and lovers of “junk” together. Enjoy your time shopping, visiting and eating from delicious food trucks and treat tables — while listening to live music.
Finally, council extends its sincere congratulations to all of our talented Stirling School graduates and wishes them well for the banquet and memorable celebrations sure to follow tomorrow. Have fun but stay safe!
