Facing pressing questions on regional connectivity and election logistics, Premier Danielle Smith and Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright defended provincial policies during a media scrum on Sept. 26.
Addressing concerns over referendum voting hours, Smith says the provincial government has provided extensive advanced voting options and distributed nearly 700,000 special ballots.
“You have to acknowledge the very real concerns that people have and address them,” Smith said.
She encouraged electors to utilize advance voting days if they anticipate scheduling conflicts on Oct. 19.
The premier was also asked whether the provincial government would reconsider a Sept. 30 deadline for tax payments following concerns raised by constituents.
Smith says she would bring the request forward to the finance minister to evaluate potential deadline extensions.
Turning to regional infrastructure, the leaders discussed ongoing efforts to restore regular air service at the Medicine Hat airport.
Wright noted that six carriers submitted proposals following a request for interest, with officials reviewing options that include seat-guarantee models from other jurisdictions.
A formal solution is expected between early spring and early summer next year.
Smith emphasized the importance of economic stability and addressed broader public sentiment, stating, “We have had separatist sentiment in this country before,” while highlighting ongoing collaborative efforts with municipal and federal partners.
