A local Hutterite colony west of Taber has been given a government grant to improve their operations.
The Lakeside Colony Farming Co. has been granted $126,875 through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership for improved manure storage for their cattle feedlot and their hog/poultry operation.
The announcement of the grant happened last month with Taber-Warner MLA Grant Hunter, Town of Taber Mayor Andrew Prokop and Lethbridge County Reeve Lorne Hickey on hand to give the colony the good news.
“Agriculture is a huge economic driver in our province, employing more than 75,000 Albertans and generating more than $11.6 billion in annual export sales. To support this very important industry, the government of Canada and Alberta are providing Lakeside Colony with $100,000 in funding under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. This project will upgrade the slurry storage tank,” said Hunter at the press conference. “A five-year, $3 billion investment, the partnership is a provincial, federal and territorial program designed to strengthen the agriculture and agri-food sectors through continued innovation, growth and prosperity.”
Hunter also thanked the colony for the work they have done and will continue to do with the additional funds.
“My thanks to Lakeside Colony for its drive and commitment and best wishes for their continued success in the agri-food business,” he said.
Similarly, Prokop was happy to see the colony get some additional funding to continue to improve its operations.
“This will do nothing but enhance the colony’s operations and I look forward to seeing the end result,” he said.
