MES’s Burger Bunch hosts successful pop-up restaurant

Grade 2 students at Magrath Elementary School served up burgers, chips, and drinks last week as part of a fundraising effort for new inclusive playground equipment. 

In the weeks leading up to the event, aptly titled “Burger Bunch”, students learned all about farm-to-table food, ground their own meat, and even visited the local cheese producer Crystal Springs Cheese in Lethbridge County. Students learned all about running a business and safe food prep. The students used writing and math skills for the event’s menu planning and advertising. 

Principal of Magrath Elementary School, Julie Gilson said, “all funds will go towards our all-inclusive playground. The playground renovation project will make the school’s playground more accessible and interactive for all students. 

The school also recently held a Duck Race Fundraiser for the new playground on May 27. In fact, the school has hosted a number of fundraisers in the past year including a charity golf tournament in September 2022, and a silent auction last June as the school works toward meeting the $230,000 goal for the new playground equipment. 

Gilson said once the funds are raised, the school can move ahead with green-lighting construction. 

“Best case scenario, we will be breaking ground this fall, but if not, for sure by next spring.”
