The following are selected briefs from the May 16 regular meeting of Raymond town council.

Items For Discussion:

The first item to pass through town council’s hands was Bylaw 1128-23 2023 regarding giving the second reading to Raymond’s tax rate bylaw. Raymond administration prepared and adopted some estimates of the municipal revenues and expenditures that would be required for 2023 during the council meeting on May 2.

Expenditures for the town was estimated to total $11,838,037 while revenues were estimated at $8,279,414 with an additional $3,558,623 to be raised by general taxation. The bylaw would allow administration to levy an 8.4 per cent tax rate on Residential and Farmland, a 13.1 per cent tax rate on Non-residential and 13.1 per cent tax rate on Machinery and Equipment for general municipal purposes.

It is unclear in the minutes if this item passed second and third readings.

Bylaw 11122-22 2023 came back to council with some proposed amendments to the Fees and Charges Bylaw to adjust distribution rates for rural water customers. They considered implementing the increase through a longer schedule rather than all at once and it will be discussed again, according to the minutes.

SARA Summer Games:

The Southern Alberta Recreation Association put out a media release that detailed their regret that the Southern Alberta Summer Games would not be held in the summer of 2023. The association detailed their difficulty on trying to secure a host community due to the long-reaching impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They did however note they are working with a community for the 2024 games, and Raymond council expressed their interest in putting in a bid for hosting the games come 2026. Administration was instructed to put a letter together detailing the town’s interest in hosting the games.
