The following are selected briefs from the Sept. 4 regular meeting of Stirling council.

Items for Discussion:

A noise control bylaw for Stirling passed between council’s hands at their regular meeting, where it underwent all three readings and was passed into law.

Stirling was up for a renewal for their contract with Fortis where they signed and renewed their five-year agreement with Fortis. Alongside this renewal the CEIP (Clean Energy Improvement Program) was approved for applications. ATCO Gas’ franchise fee was also up for change, and council decided on leaving the fee at 12 per cent.

Council Reports:

Mayor Trevor Lewington had a busy few weeks, first attending the grand opening of the Agri-food Hub and Trade Centre in Lethbridge before moving to hosting 33 teachers and four staff from Inside Education as part of a professional development program for educators. Lewington noted the group toured Stirling’s net zero projects and engaged in discussion about implications for other communities.

Stirling also hosted a meeting for the local reeves which Lewington attended alongside a representative from the Canadian Renewable Energy Association to discuss a provincial government moratorium on renewable energy projects and local policy recommendations to address concerns within municipalities.

Coun. Larry Nilsson attended the Family and Community Support Services Board – pledging to attend the Seniors Expo on October 25 in Taber.

Closed Session Motions:

Council approved a Stirling Waste Transfer Operator agreement as well as authorizing administration to proceed with the acquisition of two parcels of land for $70,000 with a discretionary amount up to the value of an additional lot.
