A new family physician is now practising in the community and accepting new patients.

Dr. Theresa Akewe is working out of the Milk River Medical Clinic and supporting the Milk River Health Centre emergency department. She joins Dr. Pieter Meyer in serving the community and surrounding area, and can be reached at 403-647-3599.

“This is great news for patients in and around Milk River,” says Grant Hunter, MLA for Taber-Warner. “Physicians like Dr. Akewe are critical to supporting and growing rural Alberta, and she will make an excellent addition to Milk River and the surrounding area.”

Dr. Akewe is a graduate of the University of Benin Medical School in Benin City, Nigeria. Attracted to primary care early in her career because of its enormous impact on the lives of patients, their families and the community, she has practised medicine in urban and suburban areas, caring for people from all walks of life.

“We would like to thank Dr. Akewe for choosing Milk River,” says Scott MacCumber, Chairperson of the Milk River Health Professionals Attraction and Retention Committee. “We look forward to showing her all that southern Alberta has to offer. Her experience will be invaluable in helping ensure people throughout the region get timely access to the services they need.”

“I’m eager to become an integral part of the community, collaborating with local healthcare partners to address the unique healthcare needs of the area,” adds Dr. Akewe, whose interests include soccer, hiking and experiencing new cultures.

AHS continues to recruit for physicians across the South Zone to meet community needs.

AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
