The Raymond Comets continue to roll.

On Friday night, Raymond ran its home winning streak to four with a dominant 37-0 over George McDougall.

After a season-opening setback on the road to Harry Ainlay, Raymond has now rattled off four straight wins, as the team sits in the No. 2 spot in the 5A rankings with a 4-1 record. Ainlay, at 5-0, is still in the top spot.

And while the Friday game eventually turned into a bit of a blowout, both teams battled to a 0-0 draw after 12 minutes of play.

Raymond opened the second quarter from the Mustangs 40-yard line but in the end, that drive stalled, as it looked like a defensive battle was brewing.

But later in the quarter, with 7:36 left on the clock, the Comets scored on a 40-yard major after Raymond broke a simple screen play for a long touchdown.

The Comets made it 10-0 later in the quarter, after a pass into the endzone fell incomplete and Raymond had to settle for a 38-yard field goal.

Late in the second, the Comets converted a drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute to play, as the home side built a 17-0 lead going into the break.

But that lead could have been even greater, as Raymond connected on a long pass play with 16.7 seconds left to move the ball down to the McDougall 29-yard line. The Mustangs intercepted the next Comets pass, however, to stop the bleeding.

Later in the third quarter, a big 23-yard reception set the Comets up on the McDougall 10-yard line. A few plays later, the Comets ran the ball in from five yards out to put the game out of reach.

Raymond put an exclamation point on the victory with a 50-yard touchdown run a few moments later, as the Comets extended the lead to 31-0 with 4:41 left in the third.

Raymond’s final score of the game came off a trick play with nine seconds left on a jump pass from the four-yard line. That made the final score 37-0.

The Comets will now head into a bye week on a huge high note. Raymond will not play again until Oct. 4, when the team will end its run of five straight home games with a 5 p.m. game against St. Joseph’s.
