Magrath Zeniths go 2-0 in APBL play to move to 5-3 on the season

The Magrath Zeniths pulled out two big wins last week in Alberta Premier Baseball League play.

Last Wednesday, Magrath earned a 7-6 win over the Eagle Butte Talons, thanks to a solid start by Westin Balderson, who worked five innings.

He gave up four earned runs on eight hits, six strikeouts and four walks.

Ty Godlonton came in to finish the job, as the hurler worked two innings and surrendered one earned run on five hits, a walk and a strikeout.

At the plate, Godlonton and Jackson Carrol both had two hits each, as Tanner Barfuss led the team with two runs batted in.

Last Thursday, the Zeniths moved to 5-3 on the season with a 5-0 win over Prairie Winds.

Magrath’s offence came to play early, as the Zeniths scored three times in the top of the first to take control of the contest.

Braden Nish worked six and two thirds innings on the bump, as he narrowly missed out on a complete game shutout victory. Nish gave up six hits, struck out four and walked only a single batter.

Jackson Olson recorded the last out, as he picked up one punchout in relief.

Offensively, Joe Wilde, Kohlman Blackmore, Balderson and Eli Steed all picked up two hits each. Godlonton scored two runs from his lead-off spot in the line-up, as Magrath rolled to the win.

Last Thursday, Raymond fell 10-3 to the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams.

LCI led 3-0 after four-and-a-half innings, before the Comets rallied to score three in the bottom on the fourth.

But LCI scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth and tacked on two more in the seventh the put the game out of reach.

Raymond ended the game with four total hits on the day, as Kasen Heggie had two hits. Talan Ralph and Asher Lybbert were the only other Comets able to get to Rams pitching on the day, as they both had one hit each.

Ralph started on the mound and went five innings. He gave up five earned runs on 12 hits and two walks.

Lybbert worked the final two innings of the contest, and allowed five runs on six hits, a strikeout and two walks.

Raymond is now 3-5 on the season.
