Petition campaigns only first step toward referendums

Petition questions require critical thinking. Long term ramifications for the future of where we live must be seriously considered. 

The Alberta Prosperity Project’s petition issue is largely driven by frustration with the federal government’s treatment of Alberta’s oil industry, and a desire for more provincial autonomy due to disappointment by lack of political representation in Ottawa.

Referendum consideration: “Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”

Corb Lund, deeply rooted in Alberta, is the lead proponent of the Water Not Coal petition emphasizing the Eastern Slopes of the province’s Rocky Mountains are an area of natural beauty belonging to all Albertans, they represent an area of watersheds and landscapes that are essential sources of clean water. 

Referendum consideration: “The Government of Alberta shall prohibit through legislation all coal exploration and mining activities within the Eastern Slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, other than mines that are in actual production as of January 1, 2026. For clarity, this prohibition includes Northback Holdings’ Grassy Mountain Project and Valory Resources’ Blackstone Project as well as any projects to expand any producing mines.”

Signing either or both petitions does not affirm your support for the issue at hand, it solely means that you want the issue on a ballot. If the required number of signatures, 177,732 plus allowing for on average a 10% margin of error, is reached by deadline the question will be put to a Referendum vote. This is when you vote your conscience.
