On May 22, FCSS oversaw a ‘Talking to Your Kids About Sex’ presentation online.
“I believe this is an extremely important and often overlooked topic; parents often struggle to know when the right time is to talk to their children about sex and how much they need to know at what age,” said Penny Pittman, Family Support Worker with FCSS and South-Central Family Resource Network (FRN) Warner/Milk River/Coutts.
The purpose of the event, Pittman stated, was to bring important information to parents and caregivers about a topic that is often difficult to discuss.
“We want to equip families with the resources and information that is needed to provide healthy and appropriate discussion with children about sex and sexuality,” said Pittman.
Pittman explained that the presentation was 90-minutes long and was offered by Tami Buroker, who is a Child and Youth Development Specialist with Alberta Health Services in the South Zone.
“She outlined how parents and caregivers can open up the ongoing conversation about sex with their children, and she provided concrete examples of what that looks like based on the age of the child or teen,” said Pittman. “There was ample time allotted for questions and a comprehensive resource packet was made available for all participants.”
The presentation, Pittman says, was open to all parents who live in the service area: MD of Taber, Lethbridge County and County of Warner.
“We have been offering this presentation in partnership with AHS for many years,” said Pittman. “The content and delivery have grown and changed to reflect the most current research, and to increase availability to families.”
