Magrath High School Society hosting AGM

Magrath High School Society will be holding their Annual General Meeting at 7 p.m. on October 29 at Magrath High School.

Heather Crapo, President of the Magrath High School Society, says that the purpose of the Annual General Meeting is to establish the executive and board members, and discuss fundraising ideas, organize fundraising events/opportunities, and listen to student groups who need any funding. Currently, Crapo stated, all positions on the board are open for election/re-election including President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Directors.

“This is an excellent opportunity to bring funds into the school,” said Crapo. “Often newer clubs have trouble getting off the ground because there are no extra resources from the school. The society has the potential to bring large sums of money to help enhance student learning opportunities at Magrath High School.”

Anyone is able to come and join the meeting, Crapo emphasized, as long as they are 18 and older and a resident of Alberta. 

“We are looking to have more support from parents/community members to help organize and man fundraising events,” said Crapo. “Membership positions are a two-year term. One must attend the Annual General Meeting to be nominated and voted in to become an executive member or board member, both of which get voting privileges. Our work is to raise money to fund student achievement and activities that aren’t funded by the school. We have only been around for two years, so we are just in our earning stage. This year, we will be able to apply for a Casino License, and we will be able to acquire larger sums of money quicker. Our purpose is to put money into the interests of the students! Band, sports, clubs, fine arts, leadership, you name it, we will find a way to fund it.”

Crapo says that the Magrath High School Society meets at least four times a year, but they can meet more, depending on the nature of the fundraising they are doing or to hear proposals from student groups. 

Crapo stated that the Magrath High School Society originally began back in 2022 because a few parents met together and formed a group to ensure that funding was available to all students after seeing that there was an opportunity to raise money during basketball and volleyball tournaments; and to also take advantage of casinos, raising money through that opportunity, as well.

Those who are interested in joining, Crapo says, can attend an Annual General Meeting or a subsequent meeting, or email Magrath.hs.society@gmail.com. 

“It is a great opportunity to help students out, and all of us are in it for the students,” said Crapo. “Especially those groups that may get overlooked or have yet to be created. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get their clubs off the ground. Many hands make the work light, so please consider joining the Magrath High School Society or check and see if your local school has a society you can help. We are proud of our work and hope that we can help all students further their learning opportunities.”

Crapo says that although the original plan is for the meeting to be held at the high school, that location is subject to change and those wanting to confirm the location of the meeting closer to the date can email Magrath.hs.society@gmail.com, as the account is monitored daily.
