Fire restriction issued in Lethbridge County due to increased fire risk

Lethbridge County

A Fire Restriction is now in place for Lethbridge County, effective Feb. 6.  Unseasonably warm temperatures, sustained winds, and a lack of precipitation has significantly increased the wildfire risk across the region.

All active burn and fireworks permits are now cancelled and no new permits will be issued.

Prohibited under the Fire Restriction:

-Controlled burns requiring a burn permit (e.g. burn pits, yard waste, large debris)

-Fireworks

 Allowed:

(Must meet the specifications in the County’s Fire Bylaw)

-Recreational campfires in approved fire pits

-Burn barrels and incinerators with spark arrestors

-Charcoal briquette barbecues and wood pellet grills

-CSA/ULC-approved gas or propane stoves, heaters, and firepits

To determine when a Fire Restriction is needed, Lethbridge County uses a data-driven and evidence-based approach. We regularly review local weather forecasts, wind conditions and vegetation moisture levels, and consult with regional fire chiefs to assess potential risks. When these indicators show an increased chance of fast-spreading fires, the County issues advisories to protect public safety and property. 

Warm, windy weather is forecast to continue, with no significant precipitation expected.
