Pandas qualify for 2A volleyball provincials

The Magrath Pandas girls volleyball team is headed to provincials this weekend in Camrose.
Magrath earned a silver medal in the southern Alberta 2A zone tournament, and with that, punched a ticket to provincials.
Vauxhall ended up winning the zone title, with a 25-4, 25-18 win in the gold-medal game, but the Pandas earned a 3-1 record in round robin play, and defeated F.P. Walshe 20-25, 25-20, 15-6 in the semifinals.
Magrath beat St. Mary’s 27-25, 25-23, upended Willow Creek 25-13, 25-23 and downed Kainai 25-14, 25-8 in pool play. The team’s only loss was a 25-14, 13-25, 15-10 setback to F.P. Walshe.
The Pandas now head to Camrose and will play in a pool with the host Our Lady of Mount Pleasant Catholic School, along with Peace River, Christ the King, Rundle College and Calmar.
Magrath opens play today (Thursday) with a 12:45 p.m. match against Peace River, followed by a 3 p.m. match against Christ the King.
Friday’s matches include an 11:30 a.m. match against the host school and a 4 p.m. date with Calmar. Saturday’s slate starts with a 10:30 a.m. match against Calmar.
Playoffs begin Saturday at 3:30 p.m., with the championship set for 7:15 p.m.
The Magrath Zeniths will not be headed to provincials, as the team dropped its quarterfinal match on the weekend in Medicine Hat at the 3A zones. Magrath fell to Cardston 3-2, by scores of 25-20; 25-15; 25-27; 21-25; 13-15.
The Zeniths dropped a round robin game to zone champions Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, and defeated McCoy 25-9, 25-21.
Raymond’s girls team did not advance out of pool play in 2A zones, as the Comets lost to Vauxhall 25-23, 25-15, fell to Immanuel Christian Secondary School 25-23, 25-19 and split with Kate Andrews 20-25, 25-19. Raymond’s lone win came against Country Central, by scores of 25-17, 25-21.
Stirling’s senior girls team fell in the 1A bronze medal game, as Senator Gershaw earned a 25-15, 21-25, 15-13 win. Stirling dropped the semifinal to Picture Butte, by scores of 25-16, 25-10.
