Stirling Lakers earn tournament title in Picture Butte

It was a perfect weekend for the Stirling Lakers girls basketball team in Picture Butte.

Stirling took the championship at the Rule the Court Tournament, as the Lakers breezed past Strathcona Tweedsmuir 70-44 in the final. Savannah McKee scored a game-high 35 points for Stirling, while Sadie Nelson and Halle Smith added 11 points each.

McKee earned tournament all-star honours for her weekend efforts.

Stirling was not the only local team to experience success on the court recently, as the Raymond Comets senior girls team earned a 68-58 win over W.R. Myers last Thursday night on the road.

Kyla Bohne led Raymond with 19 points, while Saige Gibb chipped in with 14. Taylor Graves had nine and Rees Armener added eight.

Raymond also won the junior varsity game, as the Comets dominated to the tune of a 61-36 victory. Bella Zaremba and Tanly Schmale both scored eight for Raymond. Ashlee Williams, Elena Heggie, Jensyn Heggie and Hattie Anderson each added seven points each, in an extremely balanced effort for the Comets.

The Comets were set to host Winston Churchill last night, while the Magrath Pandas opened the season at home against Catholic Central (scores from those games were not available at press time).

On the boys side, the Magrath Zeniths fell 88-86 on Tuesday night to the Winston Churchill Bulldogs. Levi Gruninger had 23 for Magrath, while Garrett Stock added 18.

Magrath won the JV game 73-43, behind a 15-point effort by Mac Strong. Ty Michelson and Hunter Cook added 11 points each.

Raymond fell 113-107 to the Medicine Hat Mohawks, despite a 31-point effort from Shae Gibb. Jeter Heggie added 28 and Jaxon West chipped in with 18.

Medicine Hat also won the JV game, 72-70, as West James led Raymond with 20 points, as Izzak Long added 13 and Tyreese Russell poured in 11.

This weekend, local teams will be busy competing in the Catholic Central Cougar Classic.

The Raymond Comets boys team opens play Friday at 5:15 p.m. against Foothills Composite, while the Zeniths take on Brooks Friday at 7 p.m.

For the girls, the Magrath Pandas open play Friday at 5:15 p.m. against ICHS, while the Comets take on Foothills at 8:45 p.m.
