Magrath’s junior varsity basketball teams advanced to the semifinals with victories on Monday night.
Results of those semifinals were not available as of press time, as the Zeniths were set to travel to Lethbridge to face LCI, while the Pandas were also in the city to face Catholic Central.
Should the Zeniths earn a win in the semifinal, Magrath would advance to the JV championship game Saturday at noon at the University of Lethbridge, against the winner of Wednesday’s Cardston-Medicine Hat contest.
The girls JV final will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the U of L. A Pandas win on Wednesday would book Magrath’s place in the final, where the team would face the winner of the Cardston-LCI semifinal.
Monday, the sixth-ranked Zeniths upset the third-ranked Raymond Comets 72-71, as Mac Strong led Magrath with 20 points, as Chayse Harris had 18 and Kobe Thompson chipped in with 16.
For the Comets, West James scored 18, Hayden Greep added 16 and Reuben Baldry contributed with 13.
The third-ranked Pandas also took down Raymond, as the sixth-ranked Comets fell 55-51 in Magrath. Macie Wocknitz paced the Pandas with 14, as Carly Blackmore added 13. For Raymond, Tanly Schmale led the way with 12, as Mataya Francis added 11.
As for the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League regular season, play wrapped up Saturday for Magrath and Raymond. In JV boys play, Raymond ended the season at 8-6, after a 90-37 win Friday over Winston Churchill and an 89-51 loss Saturday to Cardston.
In Friday’s win, James had 21, Baldry and Tyreese Russell added 15 each and Ryker Dewsberry had 11.
Russell added another 12 points in Saturday’s loss to Cardston, as no other Raymond player was able to reach double figures.
The Zeniths ended the season at 5-9, thanks to a 77-65 loss to Chinook on Friday and a 95-80 loss to Catholic Central on Saturday.
Ty Michelson scored 16 against Chinook, as Harris added 14. Harris stuck for 21 against CCH, as Thompson added 20 and Michelson chipped in with 12.
The JV girls standings saw Magrath end up at 12-4 and Raymond at 7-9. The Pandas took a 62-36 win on Saturday over W.R. Myers, thanks to 18 points from Elle Hoy.
Raymond finished the regular season with an 89-75 loss to Catholic Central on Friday and an 81-67 defeat at the hands of Cardston on Saturday.
Bella Zaremba led Raymond with 22 on Friday, followed by Francis with 16 and Schmale and Cassidy Quinton with 11 each.
Against Cardston, Zaremba had 24, Schmale added 12 and Francis poured in 11.
