The Raymond Comets rugby 7s team came up one win short in its quest for a provincial championship.
Playing in the 2024 Alberta Schools Athletic Association Rugby Sevens Provincials May 31-June 1, hosted by Westmount Charter School in the Calgary Zone, Raymond fought its way to the final, where the southern Alberta powerhouse dropped a tough 15-10 decision to Foothills.
Raymond settled for silver after a solid showing to start the event which included a 30-0 victory over Memorial. The Comets followed that up with a 20-10 win over Croxford and a 30-5 victory over St. Paul.
A perfect record in round-robin play set up the Comets for a crossover semifinal against John Maland. Raymond won that game to move on to the final.
Now, Raymond’s 15s team looks to earn provincial glory, as the Comets will be in Red Deer this weekend for provincials, hosted by Ecole Secondaire Notre Dame High School.
Raymond will enter play as a bit of an underdog – a rarity for the program, after the Comets dropped the Tier 1 zone championship game to the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Clippers.
In what was the third meeting of the season between the teams, as LCI took the win in the contest.
At provincials, Raymond will kick off the tournament on Friday at 10 a.m. against Strathcona High School. Win or lose, the Comets will take the field later that afternoon for game two of the tournament, either at 1 p.m. or 2 p.m.
Play will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. with the consolation game, while teams will play for bronze at 10:30 a.m. and gold at noon.
The other Tier 1 girls teams in the tournament include LCI, Strathcona, Calgary’s Notre Dame, All Saints High School, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, Bert Church High School and the host École Secondaire Notre Dame High School.
