Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks
The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s basketball team has added a proven winner to the lineup with the recruitment of Raymond, Alta. native, Summer Long.
Long, a small forward and three-time 4A Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) provincial champion with the Raymond Comets, brings a combination of tenacity, versatility and big-game experience to the Kodiaks.
“I have watched Summer’s game through her high school experience with the Raymond Comets women’s team winning three straight provincial championships,” says Head Coach Ken McMurray. “Summer was an integral part of those teams — shooting the three, rebounding tenaciously and guarding several positions.”
The opportunity to stay close to home and compete alongside familiar faces made Lethbridge Polytechnic a natural fit for Long, and she says she’s eager to make an impact.
“I want to bring more competitiveness and lots of fun — just aggression and wanting to play,” she says. “It should be fun. I like being close to my family and playing with people I know.”
McMurray says he expects Long to thrive in a larger role than she played in high school.
“On her high school team, she played a supportive role to some excellent athletes; I believe you will see Summer shine in an environment where she can be a standout on offence and defence,” he says. “She can anticipate, make deflections, steals and rebound — which will be an asset to our club.”
He adds that Long will be counted on to help set the tone for the Kodiaks.
“Summer will be expected to be a team leader and a great teammate,” says McMurray. “I believe Summer has the potential to really excel at this level and become a leader.”
Long highlights her three 4A ASAA provincial titles with the Comets as the proudest moments of her playing career so far. She also expresses gratitude to her high school coaches and teammates for their role in her development.
The Kodiaks open their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season this fall. Kodiaks coaches actively recruit high school athletes around Alberta and neighbouring provinces.
