This one, as they say, is for all the marbles.
On Saturday, at 4:30 p.m. in Raymond at Victoria Sports Park, the Raymond Comets and Magrath Zeniths will clash, with the Southern Alberta Minor Football League title on the line.
It will be the third meeting between the two southern Alberta bantam powerhouse programs, with everything at stake this time around.
“Magrath is a tough team that plays hard, so the boys will need to play hard to win the league championship,” said Comets coach Jimmy Ralph.
Early in the season, it seemed like this match-up in the final might not be in the cards, as Raymond easily handled Magrath by a score of 45-0 when the teams first met.
Later in the season, however, Magrath and Raymond battled to a 14-14 draw.
Magrath advanced to the league final with a big win over the Lethbridge Rams in the semis, while Raymond earned a spot with a 56-21 win over Cardston.
“The game went well,” said Ralph of his team’s victory over the Cougars. “It was one of our best overall performances of the year so far – a complete effort in all phases of the game.”
Raymond displayed a solid overall effort on both sides of the ball, according to the coach.
“The kids played physical and made group tackles, and players bought into blocking and playing for each other,” said Ralph.
It was a balanced effort on offence, as Crew Carrell, Brix Thompson, Easton Fraser, Will Clark, Porter Karch and Keiston Boehme all scored touchdowns for the Comets.
The defence also came up big.
“A few forced fumbles and turnover on downs were highlights for the defence,” said Ralph. “Our offence has shown flashes of explosiveness but our defence has been our strength of this group so far.”
Saturday, the league title will be on the line but regardless of the outcome, both teams will advance to the Football Alberta provincials.
The winner will hit the road on the Nov. 7 weekend to take on the top team in the capital district, while the winner of Saturday’s game will get to play a game that weekend against an opponent from Calgary.
