In terms of rivalry games – this one did not disappoint.

Friday night in Raymond, the Comets squeaked out a 22-18 victory over the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams, in a showdown that featured two of the top five teams in Alberta.

This one came down to the wire, as the Comets needed a late third-down defensive stand to seal the win.

After Raymond rallied late to take a 22-18 lead with only 2:33 left in the contest, LCI drove the ball deep into Comets territory, where the Rams faced a third and 10 from the 25-yard line.

With the game on the line, Raymond’s Kasen Heggie got his hands on an Owen Parker pass to put the game away for the home side with only 1:22 left on the clock.

Earlier in the game, however, it appeared an upset was in the cards for the visitors.

The teams played to a scoreless first quarter, and a Rams punt single gave LCI a 1-0 lead early in the second.

After Raymond made it 3-1 with a field goal, the Rams threatened again later in the quarter, before a Brody Beazer interception at the Comets nine-yard line.

But a Raymond fumble on the ensuing drive, after a botched quarterback/running back exchange, led to a Micheal Christos rushing TD to put the rams up 8-3 with 47.9 left in the half.

In the third, another Raymond fumble led to a 25-yard LCI field goal, as the Rams extended the lead to 11-3.

Raymond fought back later in the third, as Walker Gigg hooked up with receiver Kasen Arcus for a big play to the LCI 23-yard line. Another Gibb to Arcus connection, with time for a score, cut the LCI lead to 11-9.

But on the last play of the quarter, another Christos TD run put the visitors up 18-9 after three.

The fourth quarter was all Raymond, as the Comets took the ball with 8:35 left in the game, and drove it to the 10-yard line after a Gibb to Gunner Nelson connection. A few plays later, Gibb scrambled for a score to make it 18-16.

A Raymond defensive stand game the ball back to the Comets with 5:24 remaining. After a LCI offside turned a third and 10 into a third and five, Seth Harding made a Rams defender miss on a screen pass, as the Comets star rumbled to the LCI 24-yard line.

Harding continued to take the game over, with a run to the 12 and another carry to the five. Eventually, Harding helped cap off the comeback with a two-yard rushing score.

Now, with the win, the No. 2 ranked Comets will continue the quest for a 5A title with a Saturday game at 1 p.m. in Raymond against the St. Francis Browns.

LCI, ranked No. 5, will take on the No. 4 ranked Ernest Mannin g Griffins in Calgary.
