Alberta’s tax regime is highly competitive in comparison to other North American jurisdictions, argues Taber-Warner’s MLA Grant Hunter.
“It’s an interesting stat because of where we’re at in terms of a provincial-federal combined tax, we are ahead of 44 states as well, in terms of the combined state and federal tax. That’s important, because that means that of the 50 states that they have, we’re in competition with the top six.”
That all translates into an economic environment in Alberta which is very attractive to prospective investors.
“When we have investments coming in, that’s when jobs will come in – our biggest problem right now is actually labour. We have a labour shortage. We added 21,000 jobs in January. And we have net migration coming in every month.”
Hunter claims much of the credit for this investment climate is due to sound policies and prudent fiscal planning in the UCP government.
“So this is all because of us, our competitive position on the North American stage. Before we were losing out other jurisdictions in terms of these businesses coming here. And now that they are coming in droves, we can’t keep up. So that is a good news story. And I wanted to point that out, that our combined federal-provincial tax is better than 44 of the 50 states.”
